How it works

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal

  1. 1. Keep the whole hours

In 6 hours 36 minutes, the 6 stays as it is.

  2. 2. Divide the minutes by 60

    36 ÷ 60 = 0.6.

  3. 3. Add them together

    6 + 0.6 = 6.6 hours. To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.6 × 60 = 36 minutes.

Questions about decimal hours

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours, so 2 hours 45 minutes is 2.75 hours.

How do I convert decimal hours back to hours and minutes?

Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 3.4 hours is 3 hours and 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes.

Why do invoices and payroll use decimal hours?

Because you can multiply them by an hourly rate directly. 7.5 hours at 40 per hour is 300; 7:30 has to be converted first.

Is 1.30 hours the same as 1 hour 30 minutes?

No, and this is a common mistake. 1.30 decimal hours is 1 hour 18 minutes. 1 hour 30 minutes is 1.50 hours.

How should I round time for billing?

Many freelancers round each entry up to the nearest 6 or 15 minutes (0.1 or 0.25 hours). Whatever you choose, use the same rule every time and mention it to your client.
